Algorithm, WHO?
You keep hearing the word “social media algorithm” but what does it all really mean and how does it affect your business?
Let’s start with the basics: the algorithm is a computer-generated technology that pieces together what has historically been important to you and generates what posts you will see first based on that information. This information is constantly evolving and updating.
Let’s face it, you’re competing for the attention of a consumer. And it’s tough competition out there. Let’s talk about Instagram for today’s purposes. Before 2016, Instagram posts were chronological. The algorithm was introduced to increase exposure, but at first, users were not sure why their posts weren’t being seen. This was a major issue for businesses and influencers all around. There was no strategy provided by Instagram and users felt they were in the dark. Thankfully, this changed years later and we have more information to share with you! Let's get down to business and debunk the facts about what the real story is and how you can get back on track!
Interest: Instagram takes into consideration the types of accounts you follow, what you like and comment on, your views, and who you’re tagged in photos with to predict what accounts you will most likely enjoy seeing content from.
Relationship: Instagram wants you to see posts first from your friends, family, and accounts you seem to care about. Who are you DMing, searching for, and commenting on? The algorithm then calculates the complexities of these relationships and ranks them.
Timeliness: So, we know that the algorithm prioritizes people who interact the most with your accounts. Are you taking an audit of the times your followers tend to be online most? You can see this on the business IG analytics page. Post your content based on those trending times and you will see your engagement go up, which means you’ll be featured toward the top of their timeline. More recent posts go toward the top of the feed!
3 Tips to Increase Your Audience:
1. Show up consistently. The more you post, the more your followers have the opportunity to interact with you.
2. As mentioned above, use the data! It’s there to provide you with the best business practices. See which days and times your users are on IG and plan around that!
3. You have to put in the work - the people that buy followers aren’t at the top of the game. You have to create a quality community. This goes beyond posting consistently. Take the time to engage with your followers. Answer their DMs, like and respond to their comments, and like and comment on other posts as well! Be authentic and transparent - your viewers and the algorithm will respond in your favor!
Next week we will touch upon the 3 other factors that are included in the algorithm and busted myths!
